In his Church Order (Cerkovna ordninga, 1564) Trubar also wrote down how a preacher should visit and comfort the sick. One of these sermons is for people whom a long illness has led to doubt God’s grace and to despair.
The sick person complains: I call to God, others pray for me, yet things only get worse – so God does not hear me. Trubar gives the preacher a gentle answer: “My dear brother,” the devil always grabs us where we are weakest. These thoughts are not yours; you must bear them, and God has not left you.
